Goal
To create an engaging and supportive environment for impromptu speaking. The Table Topics Master encourages members and guests to think on their feet and express their thoughts clearly and confidently as well as to give anyone who does not have a role the opportunity to speak.
Tasks
- Prepare a set of short, thought-provoking questions or prompts. If there is a meeting theme, coordinate in advance with the Toastmaster of the Evening.
- Prepare approx. then table topics.
- Briefly explain the purpose and timing of Table Topics (usually 1–2 minutes per speaker).
- Encourage guests to participate actively — but never pressure anyone who prefers to pass. Ask the guests in the break if they want to participate. Guests may turn down the speech, members cannot.
- Invite members who do not already have a speaking role to take part.
- Call each participant to the stage, say their name, give the give question, repeat the question, say their name again, and hand over control.
Hints
- Prepare more questions than you think you will need.
- Keep your questions clear and concise — it’s about the answer, not the question.
- Create a safe and welcoming atmosphere, especially for guests.
- Give the first speech to an experienced Toastmaster so guests can see how it works.
- Your moderation is more than logistics — guide the energy of the session.
- Be creative in the way you fulfill the role, as long as it serves its purpose.
